Democracy Series: Lecture Two – Building consensus in a rapidly dividing world

Lecture Two of our 2026 Democracy Series saw members hear from Dr Geoffrey McGovern who explored how policy leaders and institutions can navigate division and uncertainty while working toward collective solutions.

At a time of increasing global polarisation, Dr Geoffrey McGovern delivered a timely and insightful address on the challenge of building consensus across governments, institutions and societies.

Drawing on his work at the RAND Corporation and his current research into the AUKUS security partnership, Dr McGovern shared perspectives on defence, data and strategic collaboration, offering valuable context for South Australia as it responds to a more complex geopolitical landscape.

The 2026 Democracy Series, in partnership with Flinders University, the Jeff Bleich Centre for Democracy and Disruptive Technologies, and major series partner Hays, brings together academics, business leaders, policymakers, and community voices to foster evidence-based discussions on strengthening democratic values and institutions where members will have the opportunity to deepen their understanding, build connections, and contribute to shaping South Australia’s future.
