New member – St Vincent de Paul Society SA

Welcoming St Vincent de Paul Society SA as a Platinum Member of the Committee for Adelaide.

The St Vincent de Paul Society SA (affectionately known as Vinnies) has been an integral part of the South Australian community since 1884. Providing assistance throughout metropolitan and regional SA, Vinnies is committed to assisting people experiencing disadvantage with a hand up through a focus on food, clothing and shelter.

Supported by 2,500 volunteers, Vinnies’ key service is its unique Vinnies Assistance program, which provides compassionate support to people in their homes or through Vinnies centres across the State. Support offered through this service includes food, clothing, furniture and emergency financial assistance, with around 50,000 South Australians supported each year.

Vinnies’ other services include the iconic Fred’s Vans, providing 40,000 meals from 10 locations across the State; a men’s emergency accommodation service in Adelaide providing more than 17,000 safe nights to men experiencing homelessness; an emergency accommodation service in the inner northern suburbs providing more than 15,000 safe nights to women and children, along with their pets; and the Vinnies Refugee & Asylum Seeker Service which assists asylum seekers and refugees who have fled war, persecution and significant injustice.

The good works of Vinnies are supported by donations from the community and corporate partners, together with sales from Vinnies shops. There are currently 33 shops across SA providing quality and vintage second-hand clothing, homewares and accessories. Sales from the shops directly support Vinnies services in the State.

Along with practical support, Vinnies offers a compassionate, non-judgmental approach to supporting people in need, and advocates on behalf of those who do not have a voice on issues such as the need for more affordable housing; the inadequacy of social security payments; refugee and asylum seeker policy and more.

“We’re really excited about joining Committee for Adelaide and we’re keen to contribute to the breadth of member expertise, helping to make Adelaide a great place for all, including the more vulnerable members of the community who rarely have a seat at the decision-making table,” Michelle Kemp, CEO, St Vincent de Paul Society SA.
