In partnership with RAA, on 11 April 2024 our SA ZERO cluster met for their bimonthly member workshop and public forum on the topic of Sustainable Transport, with a focus on overcoming the barriers to fleet decarbonisation.
Transport is the highest emitting sector in South Australia, making up 29% of our greenhouse gas emissions*. Decarbonising the vehicles in our commercial fleets is a critical action that many organisations and government departments are taking.
At the forum, Shane Babiak, Senior Manager Market Development – Mobility and Motoring from the RAA provided a keynote presentation on RAA’s journey to an electrified patrol van fleet.
A panel discussion followed which was, moderated by Michelle Howie, SA ZERO Program Lead, and included Shane, Cathi Buttfield, Project Manager EV Integration at Dept. for Energy & Mining, Andrew Howard, Program Director Electric Vehicle Charging at RAA and Scott Gillespie, CEO & Founder at CarBon Leasing & Rentals and discussed solutions and opportunities we can all work on.
Some key takeaways from the event included:
- Decarbonising fleets should be a strategic imperative, not a choice.
- Start somewhere – engage, pilot and test early.
- EV’s are not the barrier. Find the champions within the workplace to overcome issues and plan for the necessary infrastructure and supporting policies.
- SA has a real advantage given our abundant renewable energy resources.
