SA ZERO hosted another insightful event on 2 May, this time on preparing for Climate-Related Mandatory Disclosures.
The event included a presentation by Fiona Hancock, Partner, Climate Change & Sustainability Services at Ernest & Young who helped set the scene with an overview of the new mandatory disclosure standards, including timelines and useful tips on how to prepare.
We also had a helpful panel discussion featuring local sustainability experts, Marnie Hope from Flinders Port Holdings, Nikki Hebenstreit from Adelade Airport and Ann-Marie Quinn from Australian Gas Infrastructure Group who shared how their organisations are preparing for the Federal Government’s incoming mandatory climate disclosure requirements. It was a thoughtful and practical discussion with lots of practical advice for local business leaders on getting ready for reporting.
Key take-aways included:
- Understand the requirements, including familiarising yourself with the Australian Sustainability Reporting Standards, timelines for reporting and the scope of climate-related information that needs to be disclosed.
- Start early and undertake a gap analysis on information you already have and the new requirements – as @Anne-Marie pointed out, you may be surprised to find you have some really easy wins.
- Develop an internal climate action plan (if not already) and identify climate-related risks and opportunities.
- Engage staff at all levels, and as early as possible, to ensure they are aware of the information and data that needs to be reported and the benefit of reporting to help improve performance.
Thanks to all who joined – it was another great opportunity to connect, share learnings, and continue progressing to a zero carbon, zero waste future.
