The Committee for Adelaide in partnership with Baukultur, brought members together on 26 August 2026 for the latest ADL2050 Vision Workshop, Density Done Better.
Hosted by Baukultur and facilitated by David Homburg, the workshop challenged participants to consider how increasing Central Adelaide’s residential population beyond current targets could help create a more walkable, vibrant and connected urban centre.
David guided attendees through a series of provocations exploring what Central Adelaide could and should become by 2050. Discussions considered the level of population density needed to support better public transport, stronger local businesses, improved amenities and a thriving 18-hour city.
Central Adelaide currently houses approximately 26,000 residents and remains heavily car-dependent, with four in five journeys made by car. The Committee for Adelaide’s Benchmarking Adelaide 2025 report also found that Adelaide ranks 14th among 20 international peer cities for Amenity, Vibrancy and Experience, and 15th for CBD population share.
Against this backdrop, participants examined the City of Adelaide’s target of 50,000 CBD residents by 2034 and considered whether greater ambition is needed to realise Central Adelaide’s full potential.
The workshop encouraged members to explore:
- A shared vision for Central Adelaide in 2050
- The policy changes needed to support well-designed density
- How Adelaide can accommodate growth while strengthening liveability and character
- Strategies for building community and government support for a more ambitious vision
