Democracy Series: Lecture Two – Building consensus in a rapidly dividing world

The Committee for Adelaide, in partnership with Flinders University, the Jeff Bleich Centre for Democracy and Disruptive Technologies, and major series partner Hays, invites you to the second lecture in the 2026 Democracy Series.

As global politics becomes increasingly polarised, the challenge of building consensus across governments, institutions and societies has never been more pressing. In this timely lecture, Dr Geoffrey McGovern will explore how policy leaders and institutions can navigate division and uncertainty while working toward collective solutions.

Dr McGovern is Director of Intellectual Property and a senior political scientist at the RAND Corporation, and Professor of Policy Analysis at the RAND School of Public Policy. A two-time Fulbright Scholar and the 2026 Fulbright–DeBats Distinguished Chair of Politics and Public Policy at Flinders University, his research spans civil justice, statutory compliance, intellectual property, and national security.

Currently undertaking research on the AUKUS security partnership, Dr McGovern’s work presents a timely opportunity to reflect on defence, data, and strategic collaboration as South Australia navigates an increasingly complex geopolitical environment.

Drawing on his extensive research and policy experience, Dr McGovern will examine the forces driving division globally and discuss how governments, industry and institutions can work together to build consensus in an era of geopolitical uncertainty.

This series brings together academics, business leaders, policymakers, and community voices to foster evidence-based discussions on strengthening democratic values and institutions.

Attendees will have the opportunity to deepen their understanding, build connections, and contribute to shaping South Australia’s future.

Please note that this is a member event and invites have been sent.
