In Conversation: Future Ready Homes and Neighbourhoods

In partnership with RAA and Renewal SA, we held a conversation on the infrastructure, technology and services required to support Adelaide homes and neighbourhoods in the future, which closely aligns with the Committee for Adelaide’s ‘Dynamic Vibrancy’ key pillar.

Thank you to our speakers on the night which included Caillin Howard, Managing Director, Hames Sharley and Committee for Adelaide Board member Emily Perry, General Manager Community & Corporate Affairs, RAA, Chris Menz, Chief Executive, Renewal SA, Craig Holden, Chair, State Planning Commission and Anita Allen, Associate Director, URPS

Thank you to our wine partner Hentley Farm for supporting our event.

Key takeaways:

  • Adelaide is growing and with increased population, there is a need to ensure infrastructure keeps pace.
  • Given the layout of Adelaide, there are restrictions on where growth can take place; urban infill and greenfield development, predominantly in the North, will play a role.
  • Coordinated and long-term investment is required to ensure critical transport needs of a growing population are met; accessible and efficient active and public transport options is key.
  • There’s also an ongoing need to ensure sustainability, energy efficiency and quality when planning and delivering new homes, while balancing affordability.
  • Advancement’s in home technologies including solar and batter storage, EVs and IOT will continue to transform how people live and interact in their homes and neighbourhoods.
  • Insights and incentives will continue to help change behaviours; community pain-points can be catalyst for change.
  • Retaining and protecting areas of open space, heritage and character will remain important to maintain appeal and liveability.
  • Current and future generations will have different buying patterns and living needs that need to be considered today; ensuring young people are engaged and part of the visioning and planning process is key.
  • Recent reforms to South Australia’s planning system have helped improve access, certainty, and consistency; there’s a continuing need for planning to be flexible and outcome-orientated while allowing the market to be innovative and responsive.
  • Developers will build what the market wants; continued innovation in design and construction will lead to increased amenity and improved social and environmental outcomes.
